BackerKit’s Star Backer Program

We’re thrilled to announce a new program we’re kicking off this year to show our gratitude for our Star Backers and reward them. Anyone who backs ten or more projects on BackerKit by the end of 2023 will earn a special digital badge that will be displayed in the BackerKit app, indicating their status as a Star Backer and an indispensable member of the BackerKit community. As an additional token of our appreciation, each Star Backer will also receive a custom enamel pin to celebrate their achievement.

Star Backer Program Details, Terms, and Conditions

• To receive your 2023 Star Backer digital badge and physical enamel pin, you must back ten or more BackerKit Crowdfunding projects by December 31, 2023.
• Anyone who has already backed ten or more BackerKit Crowdfunding projects in 2023 prior to this announcement qualifies for Star Backer status.
• You will be able to see how close you are to becoming a Star Backer by logging into your BackerKit account, going to the User page, and then clicking “View your Profile Page.”
• Pins for 2023 Star Backers will be sent in early 2024.

We have a diverse lineup of projects launching in the next couple of months, so there are still plenty of opportunities for you to support great crowdfunding projects and become a 2023 Star Backer.

That’s why we are announcing a new policy that aims to address growing concerns regarding ownership of content, ethical sourcing of data, and compensation for the process of creating content.

Creators invest significant time, effort, and resources into their projects. BackerKit’s Trust & Safety team aims to safeguard these endeavors, creating a respectful space for projects and interactions between creators and their backers.

As part of this consideration, BackerKit has committed to a policy that restricts the use of AI-generated content in projects on our crowdfunding platform.

This policy goes into effect on October 4, 2023.

AI-assisted writing, image generation, and video technology are advancing rapidly, as are the discussions surrounding their creative applications. It’s important for us to recognize both the immediate and long-term adverse effects they may pose to the creators and creative communities we serve.

At BackerKit, we’re driven to ensure creators are fairly rewarded for their hard work and creativity. Due to concerns about AI tools using content without proper compensation or permission, we’ll continue to limit their use on our platform until there is a system that can guarantee fairness in sourcing, permission, and compensation.

This policy emphasizes that projects on BackerKit cannot include content solely generated by AI tools. All content and assets must first be created by humans.

This doesn’t impact content refined with AI-assisted tools like “generative content fill” or “object replacement” (image editing software functions that help blend or replace selected portions of an image), other standard image adjustment tools (saturation, color, resolution,) or AI language tools that refine human-created text with modifications to spelling, grammar, and syntax.

Software assisted by AI, such as transcribers or video tracking technology are permitted under these guidelines. However, software with the purpose to generate content using AI would not be permitted.

Content on BackerKit that’s solely AI-generated or lacks a minimum requirement of human input may lead to the project being temporarily or permanently denied during the review process. During a review, our Trust & Safety team may contact you to help provide verification that your content is within these guidelines. Violations of this policy after a project has launched could result in content removal, project suspension, or the project being removed.

BackerKit is dedicated to supporting creators, their collaborators, and their communities.

We are committed to building a helpful list of directories and databases to help you find content creators to support your projects. As a starting point, here are some resources sourced from our community: Directory of Illustration, Cartoonists of Color database, Queer Cartoonists database, Disabled Cartoonists database, Women Who Draw.

As part of this policy, BackerKit will also automatically exclude all content uploaded by our creators for their projects from AI training.

By default, BackerKit will hide content from AI data scrapers.

As AI-generation tools evolve, so will the discussion surrounding them and their permissible use. BackerKit puts its creators first, and we will continue to gather feedback and refine our policy and processes in order to help foster a supportive community of creators, artists, and backers.

Experienced creators know that the launch of a new project is a thrilling time for creators. It’s a crucial stage for rallying community support and generating excitement. For Mini Museum, launches are even more remarkable as they unveil the project’s one-of-a-kind specimens. This tradition has been upheld in their past four campaigns. With the launch of Mini Museum 5: The Fifth Edition on Crowdfunding by BackerKit, their first in five years, they recognized the importance of commemorating this special moment. So they worked closely with our team to create a special community event to celebrate this occasion.

Introducing: BackerKit Launch Party

To enhance the launch day experience, we invited the Mini Museum community to come together in a dedicated space 30 minutes before the project went live. As the countdown timer ticked towards the launch, community members got a sneak peek at the fifth edition of the Mini Museum. They also engaged in lively discussions – asking questions to the creators, sharing stories with each other, and getting pumped for the campaign. Once the project went live, the launch party shifted to the campaign page enabling everyone to back the campaign and continue the conversation.

The Mini Museum’s launch party lasted over three hours and attracted 8,000 unique visitors, and more than 1,300 participated in the chat and polls. Their community’s engagement level was remarkable. Over 1 thousand comments were shared, more than 400 votes were cast in polls, and more than $450,000 was pledged during the live stream. The response from community members was overwhelmingly positive, and the momentum generated by this event propelled their campaign to reach their half-a-million-dollar goal in under 15 hours.

2. Get insights about the leads you’re collecting to see if you are reaching the right audience

When preparing to launch a crowdfunding campaign, it’s important that you have an email list of people who will actually be interested in your project or are interested in supporting crowdfunding projects. A list of 45 people who are likely to pledge is more powerful than a list of 1,000 people who have no real interest in crowdfunding. You can now analyze the email addresses collected in Launch to see how many of those people have had past crowdfunding experience and are, therefore, more likely to pledge to your upcoming project.

3. Share your landing page with BackerKit’s large backer community

One of the biggest challenges that any creator has is getting a receptive audience to notice your project. Launch makes it easier to get more eyes on your landing page. You can choose to list your landing page with BackerKit’s backer community to get signups. Your upcoming project will be shared with enthusiastic backers who will be notified when you launch.

Today, we are announcing an exciting update to BackerKit’s referral program that makes the program more beneficial for all creators.

Since 2012, over 10,500 projects have used BackerKit to raise additional funds, reach new backers, and deliver the right rewards to the right places. We couldn’t do this without the many amazing creators who have recommended our services and acknowledged us as leaders in the crowdfunding space. We decided in 2019 to return the love by announcing BackerKit Referrals.

Through this referral program, whenever a creator referred another creator to BackerKit, the referring creator was invited to donate $100 to the campaign of their choice. Since we established the referral program, it’s been used to refer hundreds of creators to us.

After a successful beta testing period, we moved the program into the BackerKit app so all creators could start using it. Since its introduction, we saw a major increase in submissions as it’s become more accessible. We see how powerful a tool it can be for supporting the community and want to ensure it remains worthwhile for all creators.

In an effort to make sure that the program is beneficial to all, we collected feedback from creators and worked together to determine that referrals need to be proportional to the project. This will ensure all creators and campaigns get the same value from the program.

What’s changing?

Under this renovated referral program, the referring creator gets a $50 donation when a campaign has raised less than $25,000. After that, the referring creator gets a $100 donation for every $100,000 of a campaign they refer. This means that a creator must hit the new threshold in order to qualify for a higher donation.

$1 – $25,000 funds raised = $50 donation
$25,001 – $100,000 funds raised = $100 donation
$100,001 – $200,000 funds raised = $200 donation
$200,001 – $300,000 funds raised = $300 donation
…
$900,001 – $1,000,000+ funds raised = $1,000 donation

Once the referred creator sends their surveys, we will reach out to the referring team to confirm what campaign you would like to donate too!

How can I refer a project to BackerKit?

Referring a project is easy—when you are logged into your BackerKit Admin account, click on “Learn More” under the referral section to find your referral code.

Terms and Conditions:

1. The creator you are referring MUST have used BackerKit Pledge Manager or Marketing for you to be a qualified referee
2. Referred creator MUST be someone who has never used BackerKit before
3. There is no limit to how many creators you can refer
4. This new donation structure is only valid for referrals made on September 29, 2021 and after
5. The Donations can go towards
   1. Any live Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Indiegogo InDemand campaign
   2. A live BackerKit hosted pre-order store
6. Referral must be made BEFORE the referred creator has sent surveys. Once they send surveys, BackerKit will reach out to process the donation.
7. The donated amount will be fulfilled as a donation, and will not be attached to any reward tier
8. Donation amount is capped at $1,000

We’ve created a completely new tool called “BackerKit Launch” that will help you with the success of your new campaign. It’s a self-serve email marketing and analytics toolkit — think Mailchimp, but specifically built for crowdfunding creators. It can do cool stuff like show you how many past backers have backed your new campaign, and segment messaging based on who has or hasn’t backed yet. 

Whether you are using BackerKit Pledge Manager or not, any creator can use BackerKit Launch and get set up in just a few minutes. Go ahead, try BackerKit Launch at no cost, or attend our upcoming Launch webinar to learn more.

Charging taxes just got easier

You can now charge backers an additional tax amount based on their country and/or state. This new feature will help you collect the right amount and take the guesswork out for you and your backers — backers will see this as a separate line item on their order confirmation, and creators can see more tax breakdowns in the accounting export.

Local reward pickup option for backers

You can now offer your backers a local pickup option as one of the ways to receive rewards. Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense to spend all that money and waste all that material to ship to a backer in the same location as you. If it’s convenient for you and your backer, offer local pickup at your office, conventions, or anywhere!

Facebook Ads performance improvements

Our Creator Marketing team has been hard at work making Facebook Ad performance updates for creators. Crowdfunding marketers know this all too well: Kickstarter does not allow Facebook pixels. In 2019, we built software that combined our proprietary dataset, a beta invite and a whole lot of programmatic sorcery that essentially enables us to “pixel” without actually using pixels. So now we can lean into Facebook’s machine learning to optimize for conversions, which immediately lead to 50%+ ROI improvement—and growing as we learn to use our new superpower. Set SKU availability limit (beta)

Do you only have a certain number of a specific item? No worries because you can now set a maximum number amount for each SKU (stock keeping unit)! When the maximum is reached, our system will prevent backers from ordering more of that SKU.

Shopify fulfillment integration

For creators who fulfill through Shopify, you can now push completed orders over to your Shopify store with a click of a button. No more uploading spreadsheets!

Easyship integration

BackerKit now integrates with Easyship, making it even easier for you to automatically generate orders if you are using this shipping platform. Exporting orders for your fulfillment partner has never been easier!

Patreon integration

Patreon is a membership platform that allows creators to develop a direct relationship with their biggest fans and generate predictable, recurring revenue from your creative work. Over the past year, BackerKit has been working with Patreon creators to make fulfilling merchandise easier. Project copier: You can now easily copy add-ons, pledge questions, and/or shipping profiles from one project to another from the Tools Dashboard — setup has never been this easy!

Pre-order abandoned cart conversions: For pre-order purchasers that did not complete the checkout process, you can now see the number of reminder emails that were sent to them and how effective it was.

Add-on region hiding: You can now hide add-ons from appearing to backers from a specific region, which is helpful for creators because certain regions have certain shipping limitations.

Global backer search: If a backer emails you a support question, you can easily search for that backer from your Projects Dashboard’s search bar to get a summary of the projects they have backed without having to search through each of your projects individually.

Backer Account recommended projects email: Backers who have created a Backer Account will now get a curated weekly email of “Trending for you” projects based on the types of projects they have backed—allowing them to discover cool new projects, like yours!

Lock orders with final notice: You can now choose to send backers a final notice before you lock their orders. Backers will be notified that they can make any changes to their order, including the option to add any last minute add-ons. After 48 hours, all orders will automatically be locked.

Website redesign: Got a fresh new look that was long overdue (the last time we touched it was in 2015)! We’ve been serving both creators and backers since 2012, and overwhelmingly, our website traffic is heavily visited by backers. We wanted to continue giving backers an even greater experience, so we redesigned the website to make it easier and more welcoming for your backers to find their project survey or log into their BackerKit Backer Account.
